Book Forum: The Pursuit of Happiness
“We hold these truths to be self‐​evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence is perhaps one of the most resonant of all phrases from the American Founding. But what did the Founders mean by “Happiness”? And how, exactly, was it to be pursued? In his new book, The Pursuit of Happiness, Jeffrey Rosen examines the many ways that key figures of the American Founding turned to ancient Greek and Roman philosophers as guides toward a better understanding of happiness and the good life. Through the eyes of American figures such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Frederick Douglass, Rosen explores virtues such as temperance, humility, and moderation and their relationship to self‐​improvement and good governance. What emerges is a set of important insights about the relationship between the quality of character and the nature and success of political and social organization. Rosen’s concluding pages offer a sobering set of reflections about our own culture currently marinating in social media and internet excess and asks how we might rediscover a path that the Founders themselves worked to keep alive more than 200 years ago.

    But we had to get into WWII. Hitler also had plans post Europe. To me what brought Hitler into power were the unsustainable conditions imposed on Germany post WWI. The Great Depression only exacerbated extreme poor conditions in Germany. When people are desperate they. Will take food from tyrants .

    You misunderstood what Rothbard meant by the 3 approaches to developing a legal system. They can be used in combination, not only exclusively by themselves. Also, Rothbard did not advocate throwing away all common law. He says we should keep those laws which are in line with natural law.

    I knew John Hospers for about fifteen years. He was a very nice man. I had many conversations about everyday life with him but never about philosophy. Although I only have a high school education he never treaded me like any less of a conversation than some of the people he had associated with or talked to in his life.

    THIS NEEDS TO BE A TEN PART SERIES ON PBS! Like 'deep throat' said during 'Watergate', follow the money. We have spent more TAX DOLLARS on the Military Industrial Complex and its auxiliaries, than any society in HUMAN HISTORY !!! -- This is way beyond the elephant in the room. How can Americans swollow this endless military fiasco !! We now have a whole department called Homeland Security, with a budget almost as astinomical as that of the Pentagon. --- BUT, I forgot, we do have a lot to fear ..... certainly along our borders ...... for example the Atlantic Ocean might attack or even worse the Pacific Ocean, then what about Canada ?!? Then there is Mexico to the south ... THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE ULTIMATE HUMAAN PSYCOSIS ....

    His take on Iran is merely a rehash of the familiar communist narrative, that the evil U.S. imposed the evil Shah on the oppressed people of Iran, who then rose up in a glorious revolution in 1979. In reality, the Shah (which simply means king in the Persian language) came to power in the normal succession of a monarch, following his father, Reza Shah. The country has had a monarchal government for over 2000 years. It is simply false, to state that the U.S. “imposed” the Shah on Iran. Also false is to call the 1979 overthrow of the Shah, a “revolution”. This was a typical communist-backed coup, not a revolution. THE DEMS’ Jimmy Carter facilitated the coup. Over the decades, THE DEMS have kept the communist-backed regime in power by coming to the rescue with $billions in aid, every time a popular uprising threatens its power. I recently spoke with an Iranian woman living in the U.S., and asked her about the situation in Iran, the recent protests that the regime has suppressed, through mass arrests and executions. She told me that as long as THE DEMS are in the White House, there will never be freedom in Iran. That is the truth. And the way this old Lefty twists the narrative of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to blame “racism” and “imperialism” in America, for Japan (then a Nazi ally playing both sides, working with the USSR) launching war on the U.S. is a work of art!

    This is what happens when academics get hold of power. Thier theories are tested in the marketplace and they usually fail. Academics too often miss complexities and important components that affect economic theory. Morganthau saw the flaws of the New Deal and he said so. Lend -Lease and our subsequent entry into WW2 rescued Roosevelt's legacy and the myth that was his presidency.

    I can't find the clip on UA-cam, But he had a first hand written recording of the De Soto interaction with the Chickasaw, condemning De Soto. The Spanish colonization is considered a horrible time in Native American history, however, the truthful witness of the Spaniards themselves to such events has proven to be invaluable.

    Doesn't David kind of defeat his own point, when he said that "Economics doesn't say what should be done but rather it says that X Y will happen if N happens" because then one can't really base a political belief around it in the absence of ethics which is what determines what is desirable? Or at least that's how I understand it from the context of the discussion.

    He mentioned david Irving and one of his books. Nobody does that. David Irving is still on top of all these house historians in terms of quality and volume but being labeled as a holocaust denier by all media and jewish organizations just because he reached different conclusions when it comes to the number and programs of extermination based on his research. No scientific debate, no refute of his data, nothing like that, just like today, serious censoring and loss of credentials and job based on imposed ortodoxy. He is deemed "uneven" because he speaks German fluently, unlike most historians, and he went to Germany and studied their archives. Biased? Yes, like everyone else, but i would say totally towards the truth.

    All associations in the private realm should be voluntary. No forced forced segregation or force integration. As individuals, we can choose not to associate with those that discriminate, ie boycott it.
